Veronica’s Sewing Supplies at Kindersley, Sask out in the middle of nowhere but we are “on the way to somewhere”. We are two hours on the number 7 highway from Saskatchewan and four and one half hours on the Alberta number 9 highway from Calgary.
This year we will be celebrating our 26th year in business. We have moved three times, from a 500 sq ft to 1100sq ft to 6600 sq ft building, we’ve been at our larger location for 17 ½ years. The larger space allows us to do lots of displays. There is plenty of room for moms with children, strollers and wheel chairs to move around and lots of room for Dads and family members to feel comfortable. The store has a large bright classroom so each student can have their own 4x8 table. We have lots of quilting classes, taught by the staff and guest instructors. The room also allows us to have large seminars. We run a Kids Sewing Program with 6 classes per week, taught by a staff member, Audrey who has lots of patience. Our front windows go right across the building and are changed twice weekly by our capable display staff Beth. Changing displays often I feel is very important so something is always new and moving in the store.
Managing a store is not a 9 to 5 job. I thought it was going to be when I quit teaching Home Economics, but I do lots of homework. We don’t sew projects at the store, that is done after work hours. The planning, advertising etc is all done away from the store. |
Our store started when sewing stretch fabric was a real trend, but that now is a very small section in the store, beautiful quilting cottons now take over 2/3 of the store. It is very important to keep up with the times and listen to your customer’s wants and needs. Because we are away
from larger centers we have to carry general fabrics as well to cater to all clientele with broadcloth, polar fleece, baby panels etc. We used to have a large craft section but we don’t do crafts anymore. Quilting and Home Décor have taken over.
I feel it is important to become a member of the Canadian Craft & Hobby Association and attend their tradeshows and business seminars, they are a must. A lot of new ideas come from the classes we attend. We also do lots of open houses, and other events and we always serve food and refreshments. At our annual Spring Show n’ Tell the staff prepare the lunch and it is a fun day.
If I am to sum up the last 26 years I would say treat your customers like you would like to be treated and give them good value and service for their money. We only carry quality goods and I think customers appreciate that.
